The Twelfth Tradition

Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

One way to maintain this tradition is to have an email address that does not display our full names. Most internet providers will give you many email addresses. You can also get a free email account from Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo.

Some addicts used secret email accounts as part of their acting-out behavior, so be honest with your partner and sponsor when you set up an email account. Also only use your first name and the first letter of your last name when creating the account and choosing your display name. This will preserve anonymity.

Suggested best practices:

  1. Your personal email for SAA communications should not be a corporate, business or institutional address. All communications to and from such addresses are the property of the entity owning the server.
  2. SAA email addresses should not be stored in address books on corporate, business or institutional computers.
  3. If possible, your personal e-mail address used for SAA purposes should not contain identifying information, such as your full name.
